Burnet volleyball awaits bi-district foe after completing undefeated district season

The Burnet High School volleyball team completed the toughest task for any squad — successfully defending a district championship without losing a match.
The Lady Dawgs (25-11, 10-0) completed the objective when they beat Jarrell 18-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-22 Oct. 25 in the final regular season match at The Doghouse.
“Being district champions is special, but being undefeated district champions is extremely rare and a very big deal,” head coach Crystal Shipley said. “We have dug through the records and from what we have found, this is the first time on record that our volleyball program has ever been undefeated district champions.”
Burnet now turns its attention to facing Waco Robinson (20-18, 6-4 District 23-4A) in a bi-district championship. That match is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, at Copperas Cove High School, 400 S. 25th St. Tickets will be sold at the door. Students pay $3, while adults pay $5. The match will not be live-streamed.
“We hope you all can be there to cheer these amazing girls on,” Shipley said. “Please congratulate these young ladies as they continue to break records and set the standards high.”
The program honored its seniors, who are part of two district championships, before taking the court against Jarrell.
“It was a wonderful night celebrating them,” the coach said. “We are so thankful to our parents who do so much. This senior group is very special.”
The Lady Dawgs travel to Thrall for a 1:30 p.m. warm-up match Saturday, Oct. 29.
The varsity wasn’t the only team wearing Kelly green to win the district title. The freshmen matched the upperclassmen’s accomplishment with an unbeaten district season, too. The Burnet junior varsity finished as the district runner-up.
“All three teams truly shined,” Shipley said. “It’s incredible to see the growth since Aug. 1 and so encouraging to think about the future of this program.”
